The Ultimate Guide to Skirt Styling: Tips & Tricks

Tips & Tricks for skirt styling with lauren

I would call myself somewhat of a skirt enthusiast. A skirt is a piece of clothing that I find myself pulling out of my closet at least three times a week. I find them as versatile (if not sometimes more... ) than a pair of trousers. I find them so easy and genuinely fun to style.

They create a silhouette that you just can't quite achieve with a trouser or denim. I have many styles of skirts in my current wardrobe while also having a substantial wish list!

Let me walk you though my favourite types of skirts and my tips and tricks for styling them effortlessly!

Slip skirt

This is one of my go to pieces in fall and winter - I own one in just about every neutral shade you can think of! A slip skirt, a chunky knit and either a boot or a flat is definitely my go-to look for work! I do feel like a slip skirt is the most versatile of all skirt styles.

I do feel like a slip skirt is the most versatile of all skirt styles. I love wearing a belted blazer with a boot in the colder months, or on a day I'm feeling more casual, I'll do a pair of sneakers, a boxy t-shirt and throw a lighter weight knit over my shoulders.

Let the skirt shine! Pairing a slip skirt with a more subdued piece on top in terms of texture is important. The satin finish of the skirt is going to shine through with a classic cotton t-shirt or with a simple knit.

A layering slip can be your best friend - Sometimes the satin finish or if the skirt is lighter in colour, it may feel tricky to feel comfortable in! With a few of my slip skirts, I prefer to wear a secondary layering slip underneath to provide a little bit more coverage and comfort.

Leather A-line

Something that I've been very excited to bring into my wardrobe this fall is more leather and suede! I have had my eye on a leather skirt for quite a while now and we have multiple in store right now that just might be going home with me this season!

Not only will these pieces keep you warm in the colder months, but they are also quintessentially fall. I’ve loved them paired with a light weight knit and a boot for a classic look. I’m thinking of styling my leather skirts with an accent sock and a sneaker or a chunky loafer with a crisp button up for fall as well.

With an A line skirt, try tucking in your top either slightly in the front or all the way around to create waist definition.

Don't be afraid of leather on leather! Pair a leather boot with a leather skirt to make a statement this season.

Tailored skirt

There is something so effortlessly classic about a tailored skirt paired with a matching blazer and a kitten heel. A tailored skirt gives the aesthetic and feel of a pair of trousers while still adding a layer of femininity to the overall look. This is a piece that I am most excited to experiment with styling!

My pinterest boards are full of outfits including pinstripe, black and grey tailored maxi skirts. I love the juxtaposition of a more elevated skirt with a more casual everyday t-shirt as well. Paired either with a ballet flat or a sneaker to really lean into that more relaxed style.

Add a bold belt to a tailored skirt to create a focal point in the outfit.

This style truly pairs well with any shoe option, from ballet flats, sneakers, boots, all the way to a loafer!

We’re loving a skirt for the fall season, whether it's making a statement or a complimentary piece to finish off a look, we find they translate so easily into any wardrobe. Shop my favourite skirts in-store with us or online!
